:: Design Madness :: Design Festival 05 Coverage Part I |
|
From today onwards till 23 Nov, I'm gonna be covering some of the events from the ongoing Singapore Design Festival. Starting with this post containing pictures from DesignEdge05 and Decade Of Decadence - A Phunk Studios Exhibition.
Review 1 : DesignEdge05 Location: Suntec Convention Hall 401,402 Admission: $35
Went on day 3 of the event at around 12.30pm. Met up with Yanling at City Hall then made our way there. Getting in required parting with 35 bucks of cold hard cash at the registration/ticketing counter, after which we received a thin postcard-sized 'ticket' with today's date ink-scribbled on it, how innovative! (sense the sarcasm ppl...)
Once in, we walked tru a black 'tunnel' with computer projections u can interact with by just stepping onto them. Cool idea, and technology. Outside the tunnel was the main exhibition halls with the various pavillions.
Pitstop 1 : Basheer's Wow, I see Basheer's being on of the largest graphic book stores around decided to cash in on the event by opening shop here. Looks kinda like a pasa malam with crowds flipping tru books on an open table and throwing them aside after they're done. Behind it was the more organized display of designer toys with a few tired-looking exhibitors 'guarding' them. Didn't stay long here.
Pitstop 2 : Action City Pretty much walked past this booth as I don't see much difference between this and any of their branches all over the island. (oh then I shouldn't label it a pitstop rite?)
Pitstop 3 : UseAgain-Asia This is a little exhibit of (if i didn't misintepret it) re-usage of graphic elements and icons to create new works. Collaboration between artists. Cool stuff, small booth tho. Supported by BigBrosWorkshop.
Pitstop 4 : Stikfas Didn't help that the Stikfas' booth had a free massage chair for patrons. Cool modded figurines(limited edition) tho. Check out their site for full figurine catalogue.
Pitstop 5 : Interactive Pavillion Amazing technology on display. Was really impressed by the game that enables users to use their silouhettes as a playable character to interact with the screen and avoid flying blocks that scrolled past. Small crowd gathering to compete against each other. Entertaining.
Pitstop 6 : Live Graffiti Demo. (by LMAC and some others) Talented buggers doing 'graffiti' art on blank bear-shaped boards. Cool stuff, totally wowed away by how they can just draw at will and yet come up with such illustrations that flow...somehow.
Pitstop 7 : Toys! Mixed display by Eleven18 Studio, Toy2R etc. Lotsa toy figurines like bearbricks and the rest of the designers vinyls. Really good stuff, wish I had the skill to customize like that. Some merchandise around here too.
Pitstop 8 : Print Pavillion Some people doing live silk-screen printing. Didnt quite like the designs, but oh well haha. Long queue getting their DesignEdge guidebooks stamped/printed. I wonder y?
Pitstop 9 : IdN Proshop Didn't see much that interested us at the Print and Korean pavillions, so skipped them. Crazy back-issues or special editions of IdN mag selling at this booth. Also some posters and Lomo cams available. To sum it up : designer goods, designer prices. Ouch.
Pitstop 10 : Band Performance Went back to the Music Pavillion near the entrance as the live band starting playing. Cool music, eletronic stuff. even Yanling said it's not too bad...haha. Hmm...wonder who they are..
Pitstop 11 : DeviRobots Crazy toys at this booth. haha.
Pitstop 12 : DPM Sneaker and skateboard deck customizations here. Pretty pleasing display. Street-art in its application. Nice.

Called my cousin to check out her whereabouts in the hall. Haha, realised she wasted quite a bit of money paying for the full-event pass. $150!!! Well, I didn't see how we COULDN'T attend the conferences when there wasn't a barricade separating the conference area from the rest of the exhibition, but apparently they do only allow only Conference Pass holders to sit in during the conference timings. The hall's closed from exhibition pass holders during conference timings too. Heh.
Went for lunch and we decided to check out Phunk Studio's exhibition at the History Museum and the Best 15 of Japan Design Awards display at Asian Civilizations Museum. Walked in the scorching sun to Boat/Clarke Quay area. (the things we do for art)
Ended up I mistook the Jap display to be at the museum at Empress place, it was at the Armenian Street branch. Argh! So we just skipped that entirely and went on to Clarke Quay to view the Phunk Studios one.
Review 2 : Decade Of Decadence - a Phunk Studios Exhibition Location: Singapore History Museum (Riverside Point) Admission: Free!!
Nice friendly uncle at the administration counter kindly informed us that the exhibition is free! Wee! Ok I am cheapskate.
Went up the escalators to the side exhibition hall located near the Museum Shop. Nice big decadence logo greeted us at the front doors. Met a group of teenagers who looked like they were on holiday or something frantically snapping away and posing all over the place...eew.
Quiet exhibition hall without ushers/idiots interrupting your viewing pleasure and trying to force u to buy stuff. Love the atmosphere and decor. Large writeup on the wall near the entrance, apparently they're a group of 4 ex-MPs(military policmen) turned rebel designers. Wah...hehe..maybe I can grab my NS friends next time and form some group liddat too. Hehe.
T-shirts in cupboards and sneakers in drawers. Even saw some underwear somewhere. All customized/produced by Phunk Studios. Lotsa printed graphic designs in the form of posters, and huge TV screens emphasizing the decadence haha. Even an inflatable moose head on one wall..cute. Design process also displayed in the form of a work-table setup...Messy enough for a designer haha.

Went home satisfied and almost-fully inspired to design once agian. Hoorah.
Watch out for the next in this series of Design Fest 05 reviews next week!
